Chinese glass producer CSG Holding Co Ltd will invest USD 150 million (EUR 116.7 million) in the first phase of a project to manufacture polycrystalline silicon (polysilicon), it was reported on 23 May 2006. The first phase of the project, a plant with an annual output of 1,500 tonnes of polysilicon, will be built on a 33 hectare site in the development zone of Yichang, Hubei province, central China. Construction is scheduled to take 18 months. The range of products will include high-purity polysilicon materials for electronics and solar power silicon wafers. The technology has been provided by a Russian research institute. Annual output from the entire project is planned to grow 4,500-5,000 tonnes of polysilicon. Demand for high-purity polysilicon has increased significantly over the last two years, leading to a steep rise in prices, and shortages on the international market are likely to continue.
