China imported 14.4909 million tons of organic chemicals worth US$ 8.062 billion in the first 11 months of 2001, an increase of 23.51% and 7.94% over the year-earlier period. The import of synthetic resin reached 15.152 million tons valued at US$ 11.334 billion, up 17.4% and 8.9% over the year-earlier period. The import of polypropylene increased 21.96% and that of polychloroethylene 11.07%. Thanks to the policy of encouraging export, the import of inorganic chemical raw materials in the first 11 months went down 0.11% from the year-earlier period; that of chemical fertilizers, down 9.73%; and that of pesticides, down 24.19%. The export of inorganic chemical raw materials was up 4.02%; that of chemical fertilizers, up 22.35%; that of pesticides, up 19.41%; that of soda ash, up 16.57%; that of solid caustic soda, up 122.38%; and that of liquefied caustic soda went up 284.42%.
