China has adhered to a United Nations agreement on the drawing up of global vehicle regulations. The new global agreement, implemented on 25 August 2000, provides the framework for the development of globally agreed vehicle regulations concerning the safety, environmental, energy-efficiency and anti-theft performance criteria and limits for new vehicles throughout the world. The regulations will apply to vehicle components including safety glazing, windscreen defrosting and demisting. They will also harmonize test methods. The other signatories of the agreement are the United States, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Russia and the European Union. South Africa and Spain have also signed the agreement but have yet to ratify it.
