Chilean winemaker Vi Errazuriz has launched a lightweight glass bottle for its Estate range, which has been designed for the global commercial market. The bottle has a 12.4% reduction in glass weight compared to the existing bottle, the company said on 22 September. Lightweight bottles are part of Vi Errazuriz“ focus on sustainable and environmentally conscious production. The range includes Errazuriz Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmene, Merlot, Sangiovese and Shiraz, as well as the Estate reds initially available from Autumn. At the end of the year, Errazuriz Estate Pinot Noir will also transfer to a lighter bottle, when the lightweight moulds for Burgundy-style glass bottles are available, the firm said. There are many reasons why we have chosen to move our key wines to lightweight bottles, but most importantly for us are the environmental implications, said Carlos de Carlos, commercial director for Errazuriz. We have reduced the weight per bottle and this will lessen the energy used for bottle production, and transportation and so help reduce pollution. The new bottle, which will be introduced to the off-trade alongside a consumer campaign, weighs 425g and is 300mm tall.
