The UK“s Contemporary Glass Society will present four international speakers in a one-day symposium devoted to glass within jewellery, which will be held at the Conway Hall, central London on 29 October 2005. The event coincides with the exhibition “Wearing Glass – contemporary jewellery and body adornment“ at the.gallery@oxo in London. Andrew Logan, will talk about his “Artistic Adventure”, a slide presentation of his life, creating works from huge extravagances and monuments to rings and dog collars. A strong contrast to Andrew is Yvonne Coffey, who uses clean lines and strong imagery to explore issues of gender and stereotype in her stimulating work. Outstanding Dutch artist Evert Nijland describes his work as a search for the meaning of beauty, and as such is using jewellery and glass as a vehicle to bring this into the present time. To provide a historical context, Sigrid Barten, the ex-curator of Bellerive Museum, Zurich will share her extensive knowledge of the use of glass in jewellery by Ren Lalique from the Art Nouveau to Art Deco periods. The Contemporary Glass Society (CGS) is a non-profit making limited company by guarantee founded with the dual objectives of encouraging excellence in glass as a creative medium and developing a greater awareness and appreciation of contemporary glass worldwide. Membership is open to anyone interested in contemporary glass.
