Residents of Athens, Georgia have reacted angrily to plans by CertainTeed Corporation which may see the expansion of the local insulation plant. About 150 people, some bearing placards, assembled on the steps of Athens City Hall on 6 April 2005 evening to protest against the possible expansion of the CertainTeed fiberglass plant. The protestors claim the expansion would result in increased emissions, adding hundreds of tons of formaldehyde, soot and other pollutants to the city“s air each year. CertainTeed is considering whether to add about 120 new jobs to the Athens plant, which currently employs about 285 people, or to a plant in Texas.
