Central Glass Co. said 30 November 2007 that it has abandoned a plan to produce plasma TV glass substrates in South Korea on concerns of weak market growth. Central Glass is set to dissolve Display Glass Alliance, a venture it set up in 2005 with Saint-Gobain Glass France SA and South Korea“s Hankuk Glass Industries Inc. The company, 40% owned by Central Glass, 30% by the French firm and 30% by the South Korean firm, was preparing to invest more than JPY 10 billion (USD 91.52 million) to build a substrate manufacturing plant. The venture shipped samples to South Korea“s LG Electronics Inc. and Samsung SDI Co. but they failed to agree on terms such as price and product specifications. In the meantime, the plasma TV market has softened. Seeing indifferent earnings growth, Central Glass decided to drop the plan.
