Central Glass Co. has restructured its reward system for employee inventions. Until now, employees have only been remunerated if their inventions involved technologies that became patented; under the new system, rewards will also go for contributions that cut costs. One example would be a new way of operating equipment that reduces energy consumption during the glass manufacturing process. Also included will be chemical synthesis technologies that Central Glass chooses not to patent in order to keep them secret from rivals. The reward system will be geared toward efforts that contribute more than JPY 300 million (USD 2.8 million) to operating profit over a period of three years. The maximum reward will be 6% of the amount contributed to profit. Under the previous system, the inventor of the patented technology received at most JPY 20,000.
