US-based Carl Zeiss, Inc., manufacturer of surgical microscopes and image guided surgical systems, announced a worldwide strategic alliance with Linvatec Corporation of Largo, Florida. According to a recent report, Linvatec, a manufacturer of power surgical instrument and equipment in the US, is at the forefront of developing technology and equipment for a growing range of least-invasive surgical procedures for use in otolaryngology, orthopaedics and neurosurgery. Under the terms of the agreement, Zeiss and Linvatec will jointly market an integrated solution that combines Linvatec“s E9000 Hall Surgical high-speed drill and blade system with the Zeiss STN image guided surgery system. The STN is Zeiss“ latest image-guided surgical system, the report said. It incorporates the Windows NT-based, industry standard SNN software platform adopted by all member companies of the SNN. “The agreement we have entered into with Linvatec is an excellent example of the opportunities presented by membership in the SNN,” said Michael Kaschke, general manager, Surgical Products Division, Carl Zeiss. “The collaborative relationships of the SNN helps us broaden our product platform and deliver workflow enhancing solutions that combine the best of our core expertise with that of the other SNN member companies. We are very excited about working with Linvatec, a leader in powered surgical instruments. ” The integrated system, which will initially target the functional endoscopic sinus surgery specialty, should be available for delivery by the fourth quarter of 1999, Zeiss said.
