The factory where Caithness Glass began life is to be shut down. Thirty jobs will be lost immediately at the plant at Wick in north east Scotland. Twenty staff will stay on for a short time to wind down operations. The announcement was made by receivers Deloitte & Touche, who put Caithness up for sale immediately after taking charge of the business from owners Royal Worcester & Spode on 20 February 2004. Efforts will be concentrated on keeping the business going at the base in Perth (central Scotland). Carroll Buxton, the chief executive of Caithness and Sutherland Enterprise, said: “Obviously this is a blow. Caithness Glass is a business with a long history in the far north and this announcement is very disappointing, especially given that Wick has a higher-than-average unemployment rate.”
