The Dutch factories of BSN Glasspack, the European leader in glass packaging for spirits, were facing a strike threat, it was reported on 26 May 2004. Employees planned to strike due to disagreements between trade union FNV Bondgenoten and management on the regulations governing pensions. Under the latest proposal from BSN Glasspack, in the future employees would have to work a year longer, until 63 years, before being able to claim their pension. BSN Glasspack also proposed a reduction in pension payments and a 3% increase in employee pension contributions. The negotiations on a new collective labour agreement (CAO) including the pension regulations broke down with the rejection by the union of the company“s latest proposals. FNV Bondgenoten gave the company until 3 June 2004 to change its proposal, following which industrial action would be possible. According to FNV Bondgenoten“s chairman Piet Janssen, employees should not suffer if BSN Glasspack faces problems with the pension regulations. The company has 900 employees in the Netherlands and factories in Schiedam, Leerdam and Maastricht.
