UK soda ash producer Brunner Mond is heading an urban rejuvenation project for a mixed-use urban village, open parkland and new waste facilities at a site in north-west England. The company intends to submit official proposals to local authorities in March. Under the proposals being put forward by Brunner Mond, 20 hectares of derelict land will be cleared to provide a 1,000-home urban village with buildings for businesses and community facilities. Brunner Mond also plans to transform a 40-hectare waste disposal site into urban parkland. A combined heat and power station is planned on the site of a recently closed power station as part of the proposed energy efficient and ecologically sensitive community. Community groups will be consulted via questionnaires, public meetings, a special message line, and also through the Brunner Mond website. Local authority officials have said that although Brunner Mond has yet to submit firm proposals, the council has agreed to explore initial proposals through the development of a planning brief.
