The UK chemicals group Brunner Mond is considering plans to increase soda ash capacity at its Winnington, UK, site by 100,000 tonnes/year. The project has yet to be formally agreed but would involve a 50,000 tonnes/year debottlenecking programme and a 50,000 tonnes/year expansion. The extra capacity would then be available by late 1998, giving Brunner Mond a total soda ash capacity of 1.1 million tonnes/year. The company has indicated that the soda ash market is increasing slightly although the US market is suffering from oversupply. Brunner Mond is planning to open a new 20,000 tonnes/year bicarbonate plant at Winnington in mid-1997 (10,000 tonnes/year in 1997 and 10,000 tonnes/year in 1998).
