The Brazilian glass sector reported a slight drop on the 2001 exports. According to Abividro (Associacao Brasileira das Industrias Automaticas de Vidro), the exports reached US$ 170.7 million against U$ 184.5 million in 2000. The drop is attributed to the Argentinian crisis and the exchange fluctuations. The flat glass segment were the most harmed. Despite the drop on the external sales, the domestic glass sector moved US$ 2.6 billion, a growth of 10% compared to 2000. One of the producers of flat glass of Brazil, Guardian Brasil with 25% market share, reported a growth of 5% on the exports, reaching a turnover of US$100mil. The company will invest US$ 120 million in the construction of a plant in Parana to double the production capacity currently of 185,000 million tons. The flat glass sector invested a total of US$ 44 million in 2001. Abividro disclosed that until late 2003 the investments in the segment will amount to US$ 280 million. The sector turnover reached US$ 846 million with the production of 827,000 million tons of flat glass, 27,000 more than the produced in 2000. The best performance was reported by the glass packaging sector with 883,000 million tons and a turnover of US$ 829 million, 7,5% more than the reported in 2000.
