In the first week of March, a huge fire destroyed the warehouse at a production facility near Milan, Italy, belonging to Italy“s Bormioli Rocco glass company. Damage was estimated at about L 6 billion. The blaze destroyed the entire 3,000 sq. m. storage area along with almost its entire contents of thousands of packed and ready-to-be-despatched perfume and food containers. Night shift workers in the packaging department raised the alarm after being alerted by local residents living opposite the plant. The fire services worked all night to extinguish the fire. The cause has not yet been established and, given the extent of the destruction, this may never be possible. The plant has one furnace, four production lines and a workforce of 220. 1996 turnover at the northern Italian facility amounted to L 46 billion, out of a Bormioli Group total of L 930 billion.
