Russia“s leading manufacturer of flat-glass products Borsky Stekolny Zavod will invest about US$ 30 million in upgrading its polished glass production, the company“s spokesman said on 5 March. The upgrade of the company“s first polished glass production line started on 26 February and is to be completed within six months. The project, which is jointly financed by Borsky and Europe“s major flat-glass producer Glaverbel of Belgium, includes the construction of a new glass melting furnace and installation new glass cutting equipment made by Germany“s Grenzenbach. Glaverbel holds 25% in Borsky. The spokesman said the upgrade would step up the company“s annual polished glass output from the current 500 to 700 tons, and improve the quality of Borsky products. Polished glass is used in double-glazing windows and is a feedstock for manufacturing automobile glass. In 2000, Borsky upgraded its second polished glass production line, investing US$ 22 million to build a new glassmaking furnace, modernize a float vat and annealing furnace and install Grenzenbach cutting equipment.
