Recent orders for hand-blown glass have given a new lease of life to a historic West Virginia glassmaker. Blenko Glass Co. announced 9 March 2009 that it was resuming partial production, some six weeks after a USD 500,000 gas bill forced it to stop production and lay off 26 employees. Assistant vice president Katie Trippe said furnaces would be fired up by the end of the week for what she called a tentative return to business. Employees will rotate shifts to give everyone a chance to work. Most of the glass they will make will fill orders placed at January 2009 trade shows from florists and gift shops throughout the United States. Since 1893, Blenko has been making brilliant colored, hand-blown products, including glass for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
