Glassware manufacturer Blenko Glass Co. is boosting production of glass bricks and tiles in the hope of taking the business to a new level. “People know the glassware side, but they“re not as familiar with the architecture side”, said Brent Aikman, sales director for the architectural business. Over the past 20 years, the architectural side of Blenko“s production has accounted for about 25% of revenue, with tableware and glassware sales making up the rest, Mr. Aikman said. “There will always be a market for the tableware and decorative glassware”, he said. “But to take this company to the next level, this side of the business is going to make up a bigger part of the revenue”. The glass bricks, which come in amber, turquoise, light green, light blue and clear, retail for USD 15.50 each. Blenko“s “Fairground tiles” can be used in place of ceramic tile, as kitchen backsplashes, shower tiles and countertops. Blenko“s biggest brick customer to date is the US Military Academy at West Point. The new USD 59 million Thomas Jefferson Hall Library will use more than 9,000 amber-colored Blenko bricks in its exterior walls.
