West Virginia“s Blenko Glass Co., which has been making colored, hand-blown products for more than a century, has idled its gas-fired furnaces and is now considering bankruptcy. Owner Walter Blenko said the company cannot afford to pay for its gas supplies, and the supplier can no longer let the bills go unpaid. The number of people affected by the shutdown on 30 January 2009 is not immediately clear because the factory was already closed. But Mr. Blenko said the office, warehouse and visitors center remain open. Blenko produced glass for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., and for the Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs.
