Avirunion, one of the two biggest producers of container glass in the Czech Republic, posted a preliminary gross profit of CZK 86 million for 2001, compared to a loss of CZK 52.6 million in 2000, according to figures released by the firm. Avirunion“s sales fell CZK 54 million in 2000 to CZK 1.75 billion. The decline was due to the closure of one of its two glass furnaces, which was shut down for two months for renovations. The repairs cost some CZK 300 million. The furnace turns out up to 200 tons of glass per day. The firm“s exports were also down 44% from 2000. Avirunion produces over 600 million glass containers per year, including beer and wine bottles as well as food jars, and employs around 600 people. US producer of container glass and PET packaging Owens-Illinois, owns 100% of Avirunion through Italian firm Avir SpA.
