29 April 1999: Avery Dennison and Four Pillars Enterprise, rival US adhesive producers, are at the centre of an alleged corporate spying case (see GlassOnline report of 8 April “99). Pin Yen Yang, Four Pillars“ president, and his daughter Hwei Chen Yang went on trial in Ohio in March 1999, after having been accused of paying an Avery Dennison scientist to steal trade secrets. They pleaded not guilty to charges of economic espionage, conspiracy, postal fraud, wire fraud, receiving stolen goods, and money laundering. The Yangs are accused of paying Ten Hong Lee, an Avery Dennison research engineer, US$ 150,000 for information on self-stick postage stamps, nappy tape, name labels, and battery labels between 1989 and 1997.
