According to figures published by Austria Glas Recycling GmbH (AGR), Austria collected and recycled more glass in 2009 than in 2008. In fact, around 225,000 tonnes of packaging glass were sent for recycling in 2009, meaning that the according to Vienna-based AGR, which organizes glass recycling and collection in Austria as part of the ARA packaging recovery system. Thanks to these 2009 figures, Austria is, once again, among Europe“s leading glass recycling countries, according to AGR. “Glass recycling is obviously resistant to the financial crisis.” With more than 90% of the collected glass packaging coming from private households, on average, each Austrian source-separated around 25kg of glass packaging for recycling, said AGR. “If this glass had to be landfilled, it would cover a football pitch to a depth of 100 metres every year,” the glass recycling organization pointed out.
