The Australian state of Victoria has announced that it intends to block the development of a national 10-cent bottle recycling scheme stating that it is costly and has little environmental benefit. Gavin Jennings, Victoria“s Environment Minister said that proponents of a 10 cents-per-bottle scheme assumed benefits from the programme that did not exist, and that it would be incredibly expensive. Jennings added that Victoria would, on the other hand, aim to increase kerbside collection. South Australia has had a bottle rebate since 1977, recently joined by the Northern Territory. According to beverage companies such as Coca-Cola and Fosters, a national scheme would cost the industry AUD 500 million a year.
