5 March 1998: Reports from India say that Asahi India Safety Glass (AISG), producer of laminated and tempered glass, is expected to benefit from the Indian government“s latest notification making the use of laminated windshields statutory. AISG has a manufacturing capacity of 0.75 million laminated windshields per year and 1.137 million square metres of toughened tempered glass per year. The Indian automotive firm Maruti Udyog Ltd. accounts for a major portion of the company“s sales, as 100% of its requirements are met by the AISG. AISG also meets the needs of General Motors India, Fiat Uno and DCM Daewoo. Analysts say AISG is expected to grow at a good rate, as it has a wide customer base. The company has a technical and financial collaboration with Asahi Glass Co. of Japan, and AISG now sources its float glass requirements indigenously with the commencement of operations by Floatglass India. The company recorded a net profit of Rs 54 million on sales of Rs 1.472 billion in 1996-1997, compared with a net profit of Rs 36.7 million on Rs 919.1 million sales in 1995-1996.
