Japanese Asahi Glass Co. announced 19 June 2003 that it will raise production capacity of glass substrates for LCD (liquid crystal display) panels. The company will set up a glass substrate kiln in Taiwan, its first such facility outside Japan. In addition, the company will install a new polishing line for final-stage processing at its plant in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, where it is also in the process of constructing a new production kiln. Asahi Glass will invest a total of JPY 18 billion in the new facilities. The company now has three kilns at its plant in Yokohama for the first-stage production of glass substrates. In total, these kilns have an annual production capacity of 6 million square meters. The new Amagasaki kiln, which is to enter service in October 2003, will have a production capacity of 4 million square meters a year. The kiln in Taiwan, which is expected to come on line in September 2004, will also be able to produce 4 million square meters a year. This will bring the company“s total annual production capacity to 14 million square meters. Asahi Glass is the world“s second largest supplier of LCD glass substrates behind Corning Inc., with roughly 30% of the world market. With the increased capacity, it aims to raise its share to 40%.
