Asahi Glass is to start the production of thin sheet glass in Thailand, mainly for the electronics sector. Roughly JPY 2 billion has been invested to remodel idle facilities to enable 1mm and thinner sheet glass to be made. The products are for use in STN (super twisted nematic) liquid crystal displays (LCD), touch panels, copier mirrors and the like. Also, production of high added value items such as extra-flat glass for copier mirrors, high-transmission glass as used in solar battery cover glass and so on is planned. Up to now thin sheet glass has been manufactured at the Kansai Works (Amagasaki, Hyogo Pref.), but because production for PDPs (plasma display panels) has increased, there is no longer any spare capacity. Utilizing the Thai facility effectively and achieving low costs, the Asian and Chinese markets will be targeted. The facility to be restarted is the float glass plant of Thai Asahi Glass in Rayong with a 500-ton/day capacity furnace. It was commissioned in August 1997 but hit by the Asian currency crisis it was shut down in March 1998.
