Asahi Glass Co. and information equipment maker Proside Corp. have jointly developed an image transmission system they claim can smoothly send and receive high-quality images at a maximum 30 frames per second, comparable to television images, Asahi Glass said at the beginning of July. The system, to be sold as of 5 July, is to be priced at about JPY 2.5 million, about the same as ordinary corporate videoconferencing systems. It can be used with cameras and monitors available on the market, company officials claim. The new system can provide maximum transmission quality using communications lines enabling data-transfer speeds of around 35mbps, the company said. Asahi Glass, which produces resin-based optical fibres, expects the system to be used for medical and educational purposes as well as for videoconferencing.
