In Japan, Asahi Glass is to nearly double its production lines of compound glass, demand for which is increasing rapidly as a result of the introduction of energy conservation standards. The company will add new lines over a three-year period to its plate-glass processing centres throughout the country. In addition to increasing production efficiency and making work processes more uniform, the company will work towards standardisation of sales prices, which vary greatly with each order, from Yen 5,000 to Yen 10,000 per square meter. To increase efficiency of distribution, the company now produces the compound glass at its 60 plate glass cutting facilities in Japan. The company has 23 exclusive compound glass lines in Japan, but will increase that figure to 30 by the end of this year, and to 40 by the end of 1999.
