Asahi Glass Co., Japan“s top flat-glass manufacturer, plans to boost its flat-glass production capacity at a Belgian plant operated by its European subsidiary, a spokesman said on 11 May. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun business daily had reported earlier that Asahi Glass will spend around JPY 7 billion to boost the plant“s annual capacity by 30% to about one million metric tons by September, making it one of the largest flat-glass plants in Europe. The Asahi Glass spokesman confirmed that the company planned to increase production capacity at the Belgian plant, but could not confirm the newspaper“s exact figures. The output boost will add a fourth melting furnace to the Belgian plant, owned by Asahi Glass“s subsidiary in Brussels, Glaverbel SA. The Nihon Keizai also said Asahi Glass planned to strengthen the marketing of its multi-layer glass and other specialist products, heavily in demand in Europe, in an effort to solidify its presence in the world“s largest glass market.
