Asahi Glass Co. said 10 March 2006 that it is responding to strong demand for LCD substrates with a JPY 30 billion investment in Taiwan to increase production capacity. The Japanese company will build a new furnace at its plant in Douliu, part of a wide expansion that will raise its annual output capacity of LCD substrates by 45% by the 2Q of 2007, a spokesman said. “Demand is tight, so we are considering bringing those plans forward (to complete the expansion) within this year,” the spokesman said. The move will increase the company“s output capacity of LCD substrate by five million square meters in Taiwan; the company has another expansion project in progress at a plant in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, which will also add five million square meters to its annual capacity. Once the expansion is complete, the company will be able to make 32 million square meters of LCD substrate a year, up from the present 22 million, the spokesman said.
