Japanese glassmaker Asahi Glass has said it expects consolidated operating profit for the year to March 2001 to soar 73% to JPY 105 billion (US$ 964.7 million). Sales of electronic components and displays, including glass for cathode-ray tubes and glass substrates for thin-film transistor displays, are projected to rise, offsetting the negative effects of the strong yen and higher crude oil prices. Group sales are expected to rise 6% to JPY 1.33 trillion, with sales at the firm“s electronic component and display operations forecast to increase 35%, boosted by the addition of sales at Hankuk Electric Glass, which was acquired in 1999. Consolidated net profit is forecast to grow by 120% to JPY 29 billion.
