Trial production from the second Taiwan glass furnace of Asahi Glass Fine Techno Taiwan Co. Ltd. (AFT) will start by the end of May 2005. The firm says it will also continue investing in new equipment to output products in larger sizes. All of the world“s top-four glass-substrate makers have set up plants in Taiwan to take advantage of the booming thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturing business on the island, including Corning Inc. of the United States, Asahi Glass Co., NH Techno Co. and Nippon Electric Glass Co. Ltd. of Japan. AFT“s Japanese parent AGC is currently the world“s second-largest glass-substrate supplier with a global market share of 26% in 2004. AFT currently has an annual capacity of 14 million square meters, which are supplied to local TFT-LCD panel makers Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp., AU Optronics Corp., Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. of Taiwan and Hitachi, Sanyo and Mitsubishi of Japan. AFT was set up in 2000 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of AGC of Japan. AGC now owns the world“s only float-type substrate-production technique, which does not use toxic arsenide in the production process.
