The Japanese glass group Asahi Glass has combined hydrofluoric composite resin, PPS, and glass fibres to create a composite material with the affinity and shatter resistance of hydrofluoric composite resin and PPS. The new compound is being marketed to automobile parts manufacturers and other industries where compounds with superior strength are necessary. The new composite material, RFG-2140U, has a reported strength of 18.7 kg per square metre. When bent, it has a strength of 29.4 kg per square metre. This strength defines it as a high-end engineering plastic. The company has established an experimental plant to manufacture 100 tons a year. The price is set at Yen 2,500/kg, and Asahi expects first year sales to be Yen 200 billion yen.
