Japan“s Asahi Glass Co. and a research team at Keio University have jointly developed plastic optical fibre that allows faster transmission speed, according to an Asahi Glass spokesman. The spokesman said the new product allows data transmission speeds of 10 gigabits per second for exchange of high definition image data among personal computers and other information-related home electronics. The new product is slightly more expensive than conventional glass optical fibre, but ensures 10 times faster transmission speed, the company spokesman said. Asahi Glass has already begun sample shipments of the new product and plans to start full-fledged commercial sales from June.
