Asahi Glass Co. will enter the Brazilian construction and automotive glass markets with a production base in the state of So Paulo. Scheduled to open in 2013 and expand in stages until 2016, the factory involves investments for about JPY 40 billion. The new facility is expected to have an annual output capacity of 220,000 tons of float glass by 2016, with about 500 employees. Asahi has already invested in China, India and Russia, among others, and considers emerging economies as key growth areas. Brazil will see demand for glass grow as the country gets ready to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Asahi Glass had already invested in a Brazilian glassmaker in 1998, but dissolved the partnership. At present, a 50-50 joint venture between Nippon Sheet Glass Co. subsidiary Pilkington Plc and Saint-Gobain SA dominates the Brazilian glass market along with Guardian Industries.
