Packaging glass manufacturer Ardagh Glass, which is chaired by the Irish financier Paul Coulson, is to make 165 workers redundant at two plants in Doncaster and Barnsley, northern England. The company, a competitor of Quinn Glass, owned by Irish entrepreneur Sean Quinn, says it will be laying off staff after forecasting a significant downturn in its markets in 2009. The two plants traded as Rockware before being taken over by Ardagh in 2006. “We are in discussions with trade unions to find out the best possible ways of minimising the affects on the workforce…These changes will take immediate effect from today”, Ardagh said.
