Sales of glass packaging for olive oil increased in 2004 by 19.5%, or 15.4 points above the increase resulting from consumption of the product over the same period, according to data from ANFEVI, the Spanish Association of Container Glass Manufacturers. The upward trend has been maintained for several years and coincides with consumer preferences. According to a study by the Perfiles Institute, 80% of Spanish consumers prefer to buy their olive oil in glass, as it is considered the best container for the interests of the product. Provisional data for the first nine months of 2005 shows a 2% growth in glass containers for cooking oil, in line with forecasts for world consumption. Olive oil is the most popular cooking oil in Spain; in 2004 it was the choice of 61% of consumers with a per capita consumption of 12.9 liters.
