15 April 1999: US-based Akzo Nobel“s Base Chemicals sales dropped to Fl 730 million from Fl 850 million in 1997, according to a recent press report. Despite the fall in sales at Base Chemicals, and the divestment of its Soda Ash business to Brunner Mond Plc, operating income was up slightly on 1997. The PVC market was depressed during the year. The membrane electrolysis plant in Rotterdam is to be expanded by 60,000 tonnes to provide a total capacity of 335,000 tonnes/year to meet increased chlorine demand in the Rotterdam area and will come on-line in the second half of 1999. A state of the art diaphragm electrolysis plant is scheduled to come on-line at Bitterfield in Germany in the second half of 1999.
