16 April 1998: The Dutch chemicals firm Akzo Nobel is reportedly involved in takeover talks with British coatings firm Courtaulds. The UK 1.5 billion deal would create the world“s biggest coatings operation, and is “part of our strategy to strengthen our leadership in the coatings sector,” according to Akzo Nobel. If successful, the Dutch company said it would merge its fibres business with that of Courtaulds. ICI, DuPont and PPG are also said to be interested in the acquisition.
