US Air Products & Chemicals, Inc. recently agreed to provide oxygen, nitrogen and instrument air to the Trinidad-based Atlas methanol production facility planned by Methanex Corp. and BP PLC. BP announced in August its plans to build the US$ 400-million facility, which is expected to produce 1.7 million metric tons of methanol a year. Methanex will own 63.1% of the plant, and BP will own the rest. In a recent press release, Air Products said it signed a long-term agreement to buy methanol from the Atlas facility for its own methlamines production operations. Financial terms weren“t disclosed. Air Products intends to build an air separation unit in Trinidad that is expected to start production in September 2003.
