4 December 1997: UK-based Dartington Crystal has been awarded a certificate by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) manufacturers“ association in recognition of its inclusion in the organisation“s “Operation Excellence” project. The project is designed to highlight some of the most successful businesses in south-west England. Dartington Crystal is one of 26 firms chosen. Dartington Crystal managing director Mr. Eric Dancer said: “The Dartington brand name is known around the world, but as a company our roots are firmly here in the South West. We are proud to receive this accolade from the CBI.”

4 December 1997: Despite the fact that Indonesia“s glass container and glassware industry has recorded little growth in recent years, the glass industry has continued to contribute significantly to the nation“s foreign-exchange earnings. Most of the output of these two sectors is, in fact, absorbed by the export market. In 1996, Indonesia produced an estimated 350,000 tons of glassware, of which some 215,000 tons (61.5%) were exported, producing US$ 131 million in foreign exchange. In the same year, over 19,000 tons of glass containers (43.8% of total production) were exported, earning Indonesia US$ 11 million in foreign exchange. One reason for the slowdown in the growth of Indonesia“s glass container production is the fact that plastic bottles are being increasingly used by the drinks, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, food, and other industries. As for glassware, domestic demand has been affected by a change in the habit of giving gifts, especially wedding gifts. More and more people now give cash instead of small articles such as glass tableware and ornaments.
