24 June 1999: According to a statement released by the Phoenix Award(R) Committee, the recipient of the Phoenix Award for 1999 is Alev Yaraman, executive vice president-chief executive of the flat glass division of Turkiye Sise ve Cam Fabrikalari (Sisecam) based in Istanbul, Turkey. Mrs. Yaraman was recognized by the Phoenix Award Selection Committee for her distinguished leadership and achievements in research and development, which have resulted in the technological development of Sisecam, the largest, most versatile glass manufacturere in Turkey, and one of the major glass companies which has displayed very significant organic growth during the last decade. Mrs. Yaraman stated that “it is a great honor and privilege to win the Phoenix Award”, but also acknowledged the support of Sisecam, her colleagues and the international friends of glass. According to the Phoenix Award(R) Committee, Mrs. Yaraman“s contribution to Sisecam has not only been administrative, but also scientific and in-depth operational investigative work in the advancement of glass technology. Since 1984, Mrs. Yaraman has had affiliations with many organizations related to the glass industry, including the International Commission on Glass (ICG). She served as the chair of the Coordinating Technical Committee from 1992-1997, and is a member of the Steering Committee and Technical Committee 23 on Education and Training in Glass Science and Engineering. She has also been active in the European Domestic Glass Committee, is a fellow of the Society of Glass Technology, a member of the American Ceramic Society and Council Member of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, chairing the Glass Division. The Phoenix Award Committee was formed in 1971 for the express purpose of recognizing outstanding individuals who have made noteworthy contributions to the glass industry. These contributions may be in production, teaching or science and include the specific areas of glass containers, fibre glass, scientific glass, flat glass, tableware and electronic glass. Mrs. Yaraman is the first woman to win this award.
