Schott glass laminates successfully tested against simultaneous multiple attacks

Schott’s glass products from the Pyranova® secure and the Novolay® secure series have been subjected to a fire test and bullet attack immediately after one another. “With our safety glasses, we now offer the chance to effectively protect buildings from multiple attacks …,” says Helmut Kugelmann, Sales Manager for Schott Technical Glass Solutions.

The international technology group Schott now offers a variety of special glass laminates that have been successfully tested against simultaneous exposure to multiple attacks. The glass products from the Pyranova® secure and the Novolay® secure series were subjected to a fire test and bullet attack immediately after one another. This type of trial involving a barrage of potentially destructive assaults was performed for the first time anywhere in the world. The test results were monitored and confirmed by the Beschussamt Ulm (Ballistic test facility in Ulm) and the Institute for Building Materials, Solid Construction and Fire Protection (IBMB) at the Technical University of Braunschweig. The glasses met both of the test standards DIN EN 357 (Fire Protection) and DIN EN 1063 (Bullet Resistance).
Bombardment of a pane of Pyranova® secure that was subjected to a fire test for 30 minutes with a 9mm Luger army pistol. The extremely hot glass laminate from Schott resists three shots fired from a 9mm caliber gun at a speed of 400 m/s.
The safety glasses previously available on the market offer protection against various types of attacks, but always only against one form of attack in case of an emergency.
