A heat-reducing glass technology can extend the range performance of electric and hybrid vehicles by cutting down the amount of solar heat absorbed by cars. According to the Enhanced Protective Glass Automotive Association (E.P.G.A.A.), heat-reducing glass can help overcome doubts among consumers regarding the performance of electric vehicles, especially in the US market. According to the association, utilizing laminated glass designed to reduce the solar heat load of cars is one way of extending the range performance of electric and hybrid cars. The laminated glass industry group calls the technology Advanced Solar Control glass, which reduces the amount of solar energy that enters a vehicle translating to the less energy use by the cars`` climate control systems in making the vehicle comfortable. Thanks to these energy savings, vehicles with an electric drive mode can achieve as much as a 30% improvement in range during high air conditioning usage seasons. The glass can also reduce green house gas emissions in combustion-powered cars by increasing fuel efficiency as much as 5% during peak season use of air conditioning systems. According to E.P.G.A.A., the cars`` cabin temperatures at start-up can be up to 20 lower with the use of the solar control glass. Tests demonstrated that electric or hybrid vehicles fitted with the solar heat-reducing glass can also extend the lifespan of its battery packs as it lowers core battery temperatures by as much as 3.5.
