Can you afford not to invest?
Every market is cyclical, and glass and glazing is no different. When I first took over the management of Edgetech in Europe, I set out my stall as to how I thought the Warm Edge Technology sector would develop over the next few years. Back in 2008, the phases of development seemed quite clear. In Phase 1, the market we were in at the time, Warm Edge Technology (WET) was almost seen as ‘nice to have’ or a ‘luxury’ against the traditional aluminium spacers that had been dominant for years.  Phase 2 was legislative driven, with individual Governments across Europe instigating tighter laws and more stringent building regulations in their drive for improved national energy efficiency performance. Finally, I suggested that Phase 3 would follow fast, and, as we move into 2012, it’s obvious we have reached it. Warm Edge Technology is now the norm and the new challenge for IGU manufacturers is how to choose the right WET to be able to manufacture sealed units in the most cost effective way. And in many ways, Phase 3 is the most critical to get right, especially against the backdrop of such a dire global economy. It is in this final phase of development – as product performance is compelled by outside forces to increase – that companies start to look for ways to remove the cost out of compliance.

Don’t assume you can’t afford it
The Warm Edge Technology market is one that has grown substantially with the Pan European requirement for more t...
