FEVE: glass packaging growth gives positive outlook for the future

The European container glass industry provides a wide range of glass packaging products for food and beverages, as well flacons for perfumery, cosmetics and pharmacy to both European and worldwide clients. With 160 manufacturing plants distributed all over Europe, it is an important contributor to Europe’s real economy and provides direct employment to about 50,000 people, while creating a large number of job opportunities along the total supply chain.

As packaging, glass containers assure the preservation, safe delivery and attractive presentation of a vast array of consumer products supplied to European and world markets. Whether used for drinks, food, cosmetics, perfumes or pharmaceuticals, glass plays a vital role in supporting European trade and commerce. Glass is 100 per cent recyclable, virtually inert and preserves the original taste of the products it contains. Baby food products – such as milk – need the protection of their container to preserve purity and vitamins. Because health is not only in the ingredients but also in the packaging that preserves these ingredients.

Growth in glass packaging production
Glass packaging production volumes in Europe grew by 4.7 per cent in the first half of 2011 according to data published by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE). The growth builds on increased production already recorded in 2010.
In the first six months, the European industry produced 10.6 Mtonnes of glass compared to 10.2 Mtonnes in the first half 2010. Major EU countries such as France were up 7.2 per cent in production volumes, Germany up 7.1 per cent, Italy up 6.4 per cent, and Turkey recorded a dazzling growth of 15 per cent – all signals to a recovered confidence from customers and consumers.
