VDMA Forum Glass Technology gives us an insight on the German glass industry

Forum Glass Technology, an industry section of the German Engineering Federation (VDMA), which represents more than 60 member companies supplying engineering technology for the production, processing and refining of hollow glass, flat glass and special glass, gives us an idea of the German glass industry in this article. The Forum is the conceptual sponsor of glasstec, and also organizes joint German pavilions at other international trade shows, such as Mir Stekla, China Glass, Glasspex India and Gulf Glass.

The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) represents more than 3,100 companies
The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) represents more than 3,100 companies in the small business-dominated engineering industry in Germany. Currently accounting for roughly 974,000 employees in Germany (July 2012) and sales totalling approximately EUR 200 billion (2011), the sector is Germany’s largest industrial employer and one of the leading branches of German industry. The VDMA is one of the most influential business associations in Germany and Europe. Its headquarters are in Frankfurt, Germany, with liaison offices in Brussels and Berlin, but also in China, India, Russia and Brazil.

Voice and partner of the industry

Forum Glass Technology is an industry section of the VDMA with more than 60 member companies supplying engineering technology for the production, processing and refining of hollow glass, flat glass and special glass. The industry achieves a total annual turnover of EUR 850 million (2012) and employs roughly 5,000 people. Its backbone is exports. In total, about 150 member companies of the VDMA deal with glass. The Forum is industry representative, service provider, advisor and communicator for its members. Main issues and services are:
  • industry platforms for entrepreneurs;
  • DIN, CEN, ISO standardization;
  • advice and impact on EU regulations;
  • joint research projects;
  • trade shows worldwide;
  • public relations;
  • sales support.
