2012-10-20 | Mould technology

Experience, know-how and quality assurance, three very important characteristics that must be guaranteed in mould manufacture for the glass industry. Combine these features with the capability and availability of the company to assist clients in all phases of the manufacture of moulds and we get an idea of how the company in this article – Merkad – has ‘made a name for itself’ worldwide.

Merkad’s welding department is also equipped with all types of welding processes
Merkad is a reputable glass mould manufacturer and supplier for the tableware glass industry located in Istanbul, Turkey, supplying a wide variety of glassware moulds and machine spare parts to well-known glassware manufacturers and glass machine producers.
Merkad’s expertise and know-how in glass manufacturing processes (Press, Press & Blow, Spinning) is, and has always been, a great benefit for its customers.
In 2012, Merkad invested in new high speed CNC machining centres and another new PTA (Plasma Transferred Arc) welding machine, in order to increase its high quality tableware mould manufacturing capacity and provide better lead times.

Engraved moulds
Merkad’s High Speed Machining technique for the manufacture of engraved moulds is more reliable than other manufacturing techniques known as “EDM” and “Precision Casting”. In addition, the technique used provides enormous advantages to glass manufacturers with regards to mould life, reparability (after production), manufacturing time, dimensional precision and repeatability issues.
The process for engraved moulds begins with a rough draft of the design. This initial draft is then accurately converted to a 2-D technical drawing. It is at this point of the design process that the dimensions and positioning of engraving on the mould are agreed, and only agreed after in depth discussions with the client.
The next step is to convert the 2-D image into a 3-D relief. This is produced using CAD-CAM design software. Once th...
