Stara Glass: Centauro - the new reality for glass furnace advanced heat recovery

Saving energy, heat recovery, reducing dead times, all expressions in common and everyday use – especially in industry. The glass industry, therefore, is no different. Glassmakers continuously strive and work to have the best performances, using less energy and – if possible – recovering heat too! In this article, Stara Glass presents its most recent developments on the Centauro hybrid heat recovery system.

Centauro is the hybrid heat recovery system for glass furnaces patented by Stara Glass, that enable to obtain the thermal performance of a regenerative furnace even in plants that do not allow the setup of properly dimensioned regeneration chambers. Centauro consists in a double stage heat recovery system, regenerative for the higher temperature part and recuperative for the lower temperature part, with a continuous type metal recovery system bottoming to the ceramic alternative one. Furthermore, with Centauro, it is possible to recover all the useful heat stored in waste gas in the form of hot clean air, expelling waste gas at the most convenient temperature.
One of the main features that qualify Stara Glass’ furnace design is the project definition of glass furnace thermodynamic performance, not just as a simple addition to structural design. This approach is based on the long-standing experience in heat balance calculations on working furnaces. This activity has been carried out either on the furnaces directly designed and built by Stara Glass or designed and built by other producers, and in any case it is aimed at evaluating the energetic performance of glass furnaces.
