Glass service settings new technical standards in glass melting

In this article, Glass Service (Italy) presents its most recent development in glass melting furnaces – designed specifically for neutral borosilicate glass, but also suitable for other types of borosilicate glass and technical glass. Equipped with a combined heated tank with gas/air burners and an electric booster below, the furnace enables to find the best regulation in accordance with production, thanks to high flexibility, fast response and ease of use.

The production of neutral borosilicate glass tubes has undergone constant growth in the last few years due to increasing demand from the pharmaceutical industry, which is using larger and larger amounts of neutral tubes for vials, cartridge, ampoules and syringes.
In response to this scenario of growing demand, Glass Service Srl has designed, produced and installed a new borosilicate furnace of the latest generation, which was successfully commissioned in summer 2009. The furnace is designed to produce 18 tons per day of flint neutral glass tubes classified as Type I according to international Pharmacopoeias presently in force (U.S.P. 31st ed. and E.P. 6th ed.).
The tubes are produced with two identical tube danner type drawing lines supplied by Olivotto Glass Technologies Spa, based in Turin, northern Italy, a leading company for this kind of equipment. The accomplishment of the project was achieved thanks to the coordination of both suppliers and the involvement of the factory management.

NEUTRAL BOROSILICATE GLASS CHARACTERISTICS
The essential characteristic of neutral glass is its chemical stability, which assures medicine preservation over time. Neutral glass for pharmaceutical use is classified by  international standards, which set the limits of chemical stability by means of their alkaline cession. According to these standards, pharmaceutical glasses for medicines with Ph < 6.5 can be based on sodalime composition (type III and type II). Only neutral borosilicate glass...
